Deirdre (Dilly) is Jaru on her mother's side and Kija on her father’s side. She lives with her family in Halls Creek. Purnululu (The Bungle Bungles) is country for Deirdre and she often reflects on the vibrant colours and seasonal changes of this special place in her work.

When Deirdre was a young girl, she'd visit Wurreranginy Frog Hollow, spending her time painting rocks she'd collected. At school, she would fill the borders of her workbooks with drawings of flowers from her Country, finishing her work early to dedicate time to art. She grew up in Halls Creek, then as a young woman moved away to work and live in the Pilbara.

Eventually she felt compelled to move back home ‘to country’ and wanted to make artwork that was inspired by Country, by homeland.“I grew up around here, but then it's also putting my own personal spin on it,"

Dilly's style is unique: the viewer’s experience of her works can change when viewed from up close or far away. "My paintings are a bit like life. It looks one way when you see it from a distance, that whole bigger picture view, but then when you get close, you notice all the little details and parts you didn't see before. You have to get close to it to see all those special things. That's sort of like how I see myself, and my life. We put on a different character or mask, a way we want other people to see us, but when you get close things are different”.

When she was just eight years old, Deirdre won a state-wide acquisitive art competition, and her painting was hung at the Princess Margaret Hospital in Perth, then at 35 she became an award-winning artist, taking home the Kimberley Art prize for a painting of her Country.
