Shirley Yoomarie
Shirley Yoomarie is senior Jaru culture woman and accomplished Kimberley artist. She grew up at Sturt Creek with her family. She was taken away to the old Balgo Mission where she stayed for a number of years.
She then returned to country and has lived her life in Balgo, Mulan, Halls Creek and Billiluna. She has family in all of these parts of the Kimberley.
Shirley has been painting from an early age with family and then at art centres in Balgo, Halls Creek and Mulan.
Shirley depicts stories of culture and country and paints to keep the knowledge of bush foods, bush medicines, ceremony and lore strong and alive.
