Stan Brumby
Stan (deceased) was born in the bush around Ruby Plains Station near Halls Creek sometime in the 1930's. He worked as a stockman in the East Kimberley for most of his career and for many prominent stations such as: Legune, Newry, Rosewood, Argyle, Auvergne, Bradshaw and Victoria River Downs just over the Northern Territory Border.
Stan painted for over ten years; he attended the Garma Festival regularly which is regarded as one of Australia’s most important cultural events. He was a highly respected Jaru Elder and known teacher of his language and culture.
Through his Grandfather, he was regarded as one of the Traditional Custodians of the Wolf Creek Crater area, near Halls Creek. This area features prominently in many of his works along with his strong, raw and symbolic painting style.
Although he had travelled overseas, Stan was adamant that he didn't want to leave again saying, “Best to stay here with all this land, all this tucker. No need for a lot of money here”.
Stan's profound knowledge of his country, cultural practices, and sense of humour are deeply embedded in his paintings.
