Bwgcolman means "many tribes – one people"
Many aboriginal people were deported from all different areas and confined for resettlement on Palm Island after the establishment of an Aboriginal reserve there in 1918. My Grandparents were some of those people.
Next to Bwgcolman is Fantome Island which was a leprosy colony where my grandmother was confined. She recovered and then married.
My grandmother was not originally from Bwgcolman, but had stronger ties to the Kimberleys.
We now have a legacy with that place after relocation and marriage.
There were around 40 language groups all deported there together. They were afraid and found it very hard as they did not understand each other. Today descendants of many different language groups are still there.
