Yiyili Community was built in 1981 when Louis Downs Station was purchased back by Aboriginal people. Before that it was owned by non-aboriginal people.
When I was younger I worked on Louisa Downs Station as a stockman - learned horseman skills and all the other things we needed to know to run the station - looking after the cattle and the land, building and repairing buildings, and making sure that the water supplies were clean and working.
Louisa Station is still owned and operated by Yiyili community members under the Louisa Downs Pastoral Aboriginal Corporation.
