Water Dreaming, an important dreaming for Aboriginal people.
Ngapa (water) is vital for both humans and animals, not only for drinking purposes but also to encourage growth of plants, and the generation of native bush foods. The location of all water sources including rockholes, freshwater springs, soakage’s and underground water sources are an essential part of traditional knowledge and desert life.
In a highly spiritual society, this essential need informed Aboriginal culture, lore, and ceremony. During times of drought, ceremonies are undertaken to encourage rainfall. The passing of these dreaming stories from one generation was vital to survival. Ceremonies preserve the memory of the creation and location of the water sites.
